John received a BA in Philosophy from the University of Vermont and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.  

He was a tax attorney in private practice in Portland Maine for eleven years, 1985-1996.  

In 1996 he joined then-NationsBank (which merged with Bank of America in 1998) and was a Wealth Strategist in the Private Bank for the next 24 years.  He provided financial and tax planning expertise to Private Bank clients and was one of five members of the National Wealth Strategies Group, which provided expertise on a national level to the Private Bank. 

He retired in 2020.  In 2021 he became a volunteer counselor for SHIIP, North Carolina’s program to help folks navigate Medicare.  (Each State has a SHIP (or SHIIP) chapter.)  He found the world of Medicare planning so interesting that he became licensed as a health insurance agent in North Carolina and South Carolina.  He works part-time as a solo practitioner, advising friends and referrals on Medicare planning.  He’s building a website at MedicareJohnG.com.
