Perspective on the COVID Recovery

Andrew Opdyke, CFA, Economist and a member of the First Trust Economics Team that Bloomberg has ranked as one of the top forecasters of the U.S. economy over the past several years.

About the Presentation: From a historic decline in activity to one of the quickest rebounds on record, 2020 was an unprecedented year.  Unprecedented in the shutdown of the economy, unprecedented in the response out of Washington, unprecedented the way it impacted individuals and communities around the world.  But with the roll out of vaccines and decline in case rates in the United States, the focus turns to pace – and sustainability – of the recovery.  Andrew will dig into the data - from income to spending, employment to inflation -   as we explore what has us on track for the fastest year of economic growth in nearly four decades.

  •  Attendees will learn what areas of the US were most negatively impacted by the response to COVID, and where activity stands today relative to pre-COVID levels.
  • Attendees will compare and contrast the impact on the employment market seen in 2020-2021 versus what the U.S. experienced through the financial crisis.
  • Attendees will review the factors driving inflation measures higher in 2021, both from a supply/demand perspective and growth in the U.S. money supply.
  • Attendees will learn how stimulus spending in response to the virus is impacting the ability of the government to service the debt.
