Student Success Summit to Expose Students in Michigan and Across the U.S. to a Career in Financial Planning

FPA of Michigan’s 2nd Annual Student Success Summit to be held virtually February 4, 2022

Michigan (December 14, 2021) — With demand for personal financial advisers expected to grow at a 5% rate through 20301, a career in financial planning for today’s students and career-changers is worth exploring. To introduce students to the financial planning profession, the FPA of Michigan (FPA of MI) will hold its 2nd Annual Student Success Summit on February 4, 2022.

The Student Success Summit is a virtual event for all students pursuing a career in financial planning. It aims to promote the profession as a vibrant community and viable career choice for students. The virtual event features top speakers and seasoned financial planners to introduce students to the issues relevant to today’s financial planners and provides important networking opportunities to connect students with financial planners. To be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm ET, the planned sessions focus on topics that are not typically learned in the classroom, including behavioral finance, financial planning business models, marketing, and how to land your dream job.

“The chapter’s goal is to help students find their ‘profession heroes’ before they graduate instead of having to stumble along through their first few years in their careers. Says Stephanie Trexler, MS, CFP®, the career development director at the FPA of MI. “Our profession is unique in that we are a community that is not in major competition with one another. It means so much to see so many of the leading thought leaders give back their time to the next generation of planners so we can open the profession up to a whole new generation.”

The 2nd Annual Student Success Summit will feature noted financial planners and thought leaders covering a variety of trending issues, including:

  • Daniel Crosby, Ph.D. — Behavioral Finance
  • Wesley Gray, Ph.D. — The History of Investment Management
  • Megan McCoy, Ph.D. — What is Financial Therapy?
  • Colin Overweg, CFP® and Justin Castelli, CFP® — Branding and Marketing
  • Hannah Moore, CFP® and Eric Roberge, CFP® — Landing Your Dream Job
  • Ian Bloom, CFP® and David Frank — Life Planning
  • Brett Danko, CFP® — How to Pass the CFP® Examination

In addition to the sessions, Ben Carlson and Michael Batnick will host the Animal Spirits Podcast, scholarships will be awarded, and a virtual career fair will be held so students can meet with potential employers.

"The Student Success Summit is an outstanding forum for students to learn how advisers do real financial planning with real clients. The discussions, presentations, and Q&A are all designed to give practical advice and provide a window into how to best work with their clients,” says Stephen Schiestel, MBA, CFA, program director at Michigan State University.

This year, several FPA chapters across the country are also participating by promoting the event to universities and students within their local markets. Chapters participating in the program include FPA of Central Ohio, FPA of Charlotte, FPA of Dallas/Fort Worth, FPA of Greater Indiana, FPA of Illinois, FPA of South Carolina, FPA of Southwestern Ohio, FPA of the Triangle, and FPA of Orange County. The first Student Success Summit was held earlier this year and involved 160 students, 20 faculty members from 25 universities and colleges across 14 states.

“It was great as a freshman to hear what successful financial planners did throughout their college years. I can better structure my collegiate path knowing that it is a possible route to where I want to be,” says Varun Reddy, a freshman at Michigan State University.

Complimentary registration is now open for the Student Success Summit until February 3, 2022. Members of the media interested in attending are encouraged to inquire with Stephanie Trexler, CFP®, at stephanie@ggwealthplanning.com
