A Message from Your FPA PAC Board Chair
I strongly believe in FPA’s Primary Aim: To elevate the profession that transforms lives through the power of financial planning. I was committed to that mission over my six years of service on the FPA Board of Directors and now as chair of the FPA Political Action Committee (FPA PAC). I live to see the day when financial planners are respected and recognized as professionals alongside doctors, lawyers, CPAs, teachers, and other currently-recognized professionals. Toward that end, I serve on the FPA PAC board to raise funds from FPA Members to support our current and future public policy initiatives and goals.
In 2024, our goal is to raise the level of awareness, engagement, and fundraising for the FPA PAC to influence policy via the upcoming elections and beyond as we seek recognition of financial planning as a profession. We’re excited to share with you the steps we’ve taken towards achieving these goals in the first quarter of this year and hope you will consider supporting the FPA PAC.
Sincerely,
February Virtual PAC Reception
The FPA PAC held its annual spring virtual reception on February 8 with Duane Thompson, president of Potomac Strategies, LLC. Duane provided FPA Members with a thorough overview of legislation and regulations impacting the financial planning profession currently being considered at the state and federal levels. You can watch the on-demand recording of the reception.
2024 Election Cycle Activities
As we all know, 2024 is an election year, and the FPA PAC is committed to identifying the Congressional candidates, both incumbents and those challenging incumbent seats, who share FPA’s goals related to advancing the financial planning profession, are in leadership positions in important Congressional Committees, and/or have expressed a commitment to increasing access to financial wellness education.
To help us identify incumbent and non-incumbent candidates who satisfy the tenets of the FPA PAC Candidate Contribution Guidelines, the FPA PAC finalized and began distributing our first-ever FPA PAC 2024 Candidate Questionnaire. We’ve sent questionnaires to 20 candidates in eight Congressional districts across two states and will continue this process through the summer and fall as primary elections conclude in each state. We hope to utilize the results of these questionnaires to inform both FPA PAC campaign contributions, which will be presented to you as part of an FPA PAC 2024 Congressional Elections Voter Guide ahead of the general election in November.
In Q1, the FPA PAC also identified our first campaign contributions to incumbents who have supported FPA and our policy priorities, including:
In the Senate, FPA has historically worked to create relationships on the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, where Chairman Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is up for re-election, but Ranking Member Tim Scott (R-SC) is not. In the Senate Finance Committee, Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Ranking Member Mike Crapo (R-ID) are not up for re-election.
In the House, FPA has prioritized the House Financial Services Committee, where Chairman Patrick McHenry (R-NC) and Ranking Member Maxine Waters (D-CA) are both up for re-election.
