Dr. Preston D. Cherry, CFP®, assumed key volunteer editorial role with the Journal effective Dec. 1

DENVER (December 7, 2021) – Today, the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®) announced Dr. Preston D. Cherry, CFP®, as the new practitioner editor of the award-winning, peer-reviewed Journal of Financial Planning. Dr. Cherry’s new role is effective Dec. 1, 2021.

For 43 years, the Journal of Financial Planning has been published monthly and focuses on expanding the body of knowledge in the financial planning profession. Launched in 1979, the Journal features thought-provoking articles, interviews, columns, and peer-reviewed technical contributions that directly benefit financial planners and their work.

As practitioner editor, Dr. Cherry will serve as a valued member of the Journal of Financial Planning’s advisory team by providing critical input on topics and articles that are most relevant to practicing CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals. When appropriate, Dr. Cherry will help identify and recruit new contributors and provide a practitioner voice on Journal programs and initiatives, including the annual Trends in Investing research announced each June.

He is not only helping to shape the minds of the next generation of financial planners, but his work as a practitioner will help Journal readers connect financial planning theory with practical application,” says Patrick D. Preston’s involvement will help build on that legacy in the years to come.”

Over 14 years, Dr. Cherry has served in lead financial planning roles, an RIA co-investment manager of $120M in firm assets, and a mutual fund wholesaler. Currently, Dr. Cherry is the founder and president of Concurrent Financial Planning, LLC, a firm that helps households and business owners, and serves as Assistant Professor of Finance and Head of the Personal Financial Planning Program at the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay. He also currently serves as a financial advisor coach with Carson Group Coaching.

The body of knowledge in financial planning must continue to expand by elevating the existing knowledge by introducing and achieving diverse thought across topics, perspectives, technical, and social demographic domains,” says Preston Cherry, Ph.D., CFP®. “I aim to draw on an assortment of academic, practitioner, professional relationship experiences for my contribution to help continue the storied knowledge-building mission of the Journal.”

Dr. Cherry’s current academic research focuses on personality traits and financial uncertainty risks. His work on the psychology of money has led to his involvement in the Financial Therapy Association, where he serves as the volunteer president-elect. Dr. Cherry also serves on CFP Board’s Council on Education, the Board of the Association of African American Advisors Foundation, and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Personal Finance. He has earned a Ph.D. in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University and a B.B.A. in Finance from Prairie View A&M University.
