Dear Members,
Hurricane Ian had a devastating impact on Southwest Florida. We all have read the news reports or watched the footage. Our hearts go out to all those coping with the hurricane’s impact as they face a long rebuild in the months ahead. Many are sifting through the aftermath and discerning difficult choices. Among them are 125 of our fellow Members across two of our chapters, FPA of Southwest Florida and FPA of the Suncoast.
We are aware of a direct impact on several of our Members and personal hardships among some of FPA’s extended family in the area. The property damage from flooding and wind, power outages and related communication challenges, variable ups and downs of supplies of essential goods and services, and navigating life in general amidst the wreckage applies to anyone living there.
Many of you have asked how you can help. There will be a time and place for FPA’s vaunted pro bono financial planning program that FPA Members are proud to dedicate time and effort towards; however, the immediate need for basic necessities and aid will remain a priority in the weeks ahead.
There are two ways you can help today:
- Consider a donation to the United Way of Florida’s Disaster Recovery Fund. The United Way is a well-established charitable organization that does important work nationwide. But their organization in Florida has boots on the ground right now to help those impacted by Hurricane Ian. Donations are tax-deductible. If you donate, add “FPA” to the comments area in the online form so we can track our collective financial support.
- Join the Hurricane Ian Support Effort community on FPA Connect. This online community provides a means for FPA Members in areas directly impacted by Hurricane Ian to seek assistance from their fellow Members. This “service exchange” is for members in Florida needing office space, supplies, and other support to connect with FPA members who are willing and ready to share resources during this time of need.
Once the situation has stabilized in Florida, we will be in touch regarding how FPA Members can work with our local Florida chapters to engage the community in pro bono financial planning support.
