Second Session: Understanding Opportunity Zones, Presented by Michael Shotton, Cantor Fitzgerald
TI1e presentation provides an overview of the Qualified Opportunity Zone program. The background for how congress passed the OZ legislation provides great context to understand how to use the program. The presentation then goes through the tax benefits of investing in an OZ fund and the timeline investors must follow to receive those ta." benefits. Once we know the benefits, the presentation goes through the requirements and risks of using an OZ fund to defer and eliminate ta.xes. Finally, we will compare and contrast. Opportunity Zones to another well-known taxdeferral option, the 1031 exchange. Since the 1031 exchange is better known than Opportunity Zones, it really helps advisors solidify their understanding of OZs by comparing them to the 1031 exchange.
